The Personhood Amendment

Kristi Burton pledged her life to fighting abortion at thirteen. At nineteen she began the pro-life organization Colorado For Equal Rights, designed for the purpose of getting an amendment passed in Colorado that would define a human as a person "from the moment of fertilization." Now, as a twenty-one year old law student, Kristi is going to get to see the amendment on the Colorado ballot this November.

Watch this awesome little video to find out about the Personhood Amendment.

This story thrills me because I am interested in law and politics myself and I strongly believe in activism and grassroots support. It's always inspiring to read about (especially young) people who do hard things on such a high and far-reaching level.

Election day is almost here! Please pass this around, let people know about it. PRAY about it. Our country will only move if the PEOPLE move it - and that means you and I!

Amendment 48 would make abortion first-degree murder, except perhaps to save the woman's life. First-degree murder is defined in Colorado law as deliberately causing the death of a "person," a crime punished by life in prison or the death penalty. So women and their doctors would be punished with the severest possible penalty under law for terminating a pregnancy -- even in cases of rape, incest, and fetal deformity.

If that's "pro-life," then I'll eat my hat. The simple fact is that Amendment 48 a thoroughly immoral law based on the fantasy that a zygote is a person with rights.

Hallo Strongjoy-

Amen!!!! Very inspiring. (I'll bet Kristi Burton was homeschooled:) That kind of thing makes you want to get of your seat and do hard things for the glory of God.

I love the music on your blog now... The Call is one of my favorite Narnian songs.

Hi Anne,

You're right- Kristi Burton was homeschooled :) Good guess! Check out: http://www.denverpost.com/ci_9153861

I LOVE The Call too - my FAVORITE Narnian song and I can play it on the guitar too - when I have a capo. Generally the capo is lost because my little sister plays guitar also:)

Thanks for not giving up on me when I didn't answer your last comment. I'm a little slow, as my days this week have been filled with studying, taking care of goat-kids and sick goats, clipping chickens' wings, butchering roosters, recovering from a horrible cold and reading the 981 pages of Les Miserables.

Hello Diana,

As a former fetus, I oppose abortion.

I've been to your blog and noticed that you like to gamble. You're playing with something that none of us can prove one way or the other. If you're right
that there is no God and that an unborn fetus is only a "zygote" and not a human, you have been
instrumental only in terminating thousands of potential human beings. But if you're wrong, you
are guilty of murdering thousands of living persons, and you will one day stand before their
Creator with nothing to back up your actions. I personally don't like high-risk, especially risk of
that sort.

I was really interested by your use of the word, "immoral" in your previous comments. If there is no
God, and thus, no absolute, how can there be a "right" or a "wrong" and, assuming there is anyway, who is to say what is right and what is wrong? We only have the majority...and that's why Colorado is VOTING on this. You don't like it, and I don't like
it either. We both believe the issue is too important to be played with. However, since we
obviously haven't been able to agree, the fact remains that the people of the State in question
are going to decide for their own state. It won't change the way you or I think about the issue, but it will be either life or death for the unborn who
cannot speak themselves.

I want to take this opportunity to clear up something here: Pro-life activists are accused of caring so much about the unborn child that they forget about the mother. This is not true for most pro-life activists. To devote yourself to
something, you must have a driving force and that force will be either love or hate. I cannot speak for everyone, obviously, but all the pro-life activists I know work for love - and that includes
love for the women and young girls who have had, are having or are planning an abortion. We're not
jumping on their case and trying to "punish them with a baby." We are not in the dark about what
we're fighting against. We know that there is incredible stress on these women. We know that they
need support and care and hundreds of the people who champion this cause devote their lives to
helping these young mothers, even when the mothers choose an abortion. Kristi Burton cares about the mothers also (http://www.denverpost.com/ci_9153861) and realizes, like so many other pro-life activists, that abortion is harmful for the woman as well as for the unborn child inside her. Dolores O 'Riordan, who is a secular pro-life singer says, "It's not good for women to go through the procedure [abortion] and have something living sucked out of their bodies. It belittles women." We agree with her. It is true that we don't believe a woman should have the right to kill her unborn
child, but this does not mean that we don't understand the woman's position and want to support her. It means only that we recognize the fetus as something SEPARATELY alive, even while still inside the
womb. A parent does not OWN their child, surely you will agree!

In the end, then, Diana, this is a matter of faith. I believe there is a God. You don't. Therefore, it seems we are at an impasse. None of your arguments are going to change the way I think about this issue because they cannot change what I have personally experienced with my Creator.

Best Wishes and Seize The Day!

What's with THE CALL???? I can't get it on any of the YouTubes or on either of our playlists!!!

Thanks, Strongjoy! I'll try to get my mom to look into that. I was wondering whether it had been taken of the internet (panic attack!!!).

I just noticed the comment that you received that challenged your view of abortion. I must say, you handled that very nicely.

Hallo Strongjoy-

Oh please don't feel bad about replying to comments! I don't expect you to have to reply to every single little comment on your bloggy... that could bog you down for sure. Oh, I was also "inspired" (nice word, eh?) by your response to Diana. You have a wonderful way of expressing yourself.

I have not looked at that link yet but I will soon.

Thanks,

Anne

P.S. I hope you get over that cold! One is pasing around our family now, and it is sooo miserable :(
